Community Solar On Haida Gwaii

Xuyaa Sangslaang
SolShare is working with local partners, including Swiilawiid Sustainability Society and Tll Yahda Energy, to develop a community owned solar project in Masset on Haida Gwaii. The 97 kW solar array would be owned by local residents and other people in BC. The project is named “Xuyaa Sangslaang” meaning “the sun is trying to shine.” Pronunciation guide for the name can found here.
We are especially excited about this project because it will offset electricity on a grid that is over 90% diesel powered and have a significant green house gas reduction.
The Grocery Co-op in Masset will host the project on their rooftop and purchase the solar power. The equipment we are installing is also able to share information and receive instructions from the grid operator. We will offer BC Hydro the ability to test these capabilities so they can add more distributed solar energy.
There is the opportunity for up to 192 community members to become co-owners. The minimum buy in is $500. There is also the opportunity for 20 low income households to receive a grant to cover the cost of shares.
We began accepting shareholders in October 2026 with applications closing November 4, 2026. Priority will be given to residents of Haida Gwaii. Installation of the solar array started in September, 2026.
